#5 What accessory do you never leave home without?

If you choose mostly As … then you are as sparkling and resourceful as Her Serene Royal Highness Dagmar from The Truth About Leo by Katie MacAlister. Dagmar may have been raised in a strictly formal manner, but she’s never let that stop her from pursuing anything that catches her interest. She’s a bit quirky, marches to her own drummer, and has a fine, fine appreciation of the manly form.

If you choose mostly Bs … then you are clearly the stuff a baroness is made of, much like Millicent, from The Traitor. Milly is sweet, fierce, determined, and brave but slow to trust. Sebastian, Baron St. Clair, is ALSO sweet, fierce, determined and brave, and relentless when it comes to protecting those he cares for. Alas for both Sebastian and Milly, an enemy stalks them who is not sweet. By the time Milly is done with Sebastian’s enemies, they are not very brave either. So if you chose mostly B’s, the bad guys better steer mighty clear of you!

If you choose mostly Cs … then you are equipped to be a master spy like Jane Bonde from Love and Let Spy by Shana Galen. Jane is smart, cunning, and loyal, but she has her weaknesses too. Her latest weakness goes by the name Dominic Griffyn. Planning a wedding and defeating a villain intent upon the destruction of England is tricky, but if you’re the sort who multitasks easily, then you too have Jane’s unique skills and panache.

LoveAndLetSpyAnd of course, as promised in the headline, there’s a contest! Wahoo.

Historical Puzzle 1 – Eulogy of Frank Steiger

Hi there everyone. Welcome to a new occasional set of posts I’m going to do. As I mentioned a few months ago, I have a huge box of stuff from my family, going back decades (and some of the pictures go back like 125 years or more). So, I thought it might be fun to share some of it.

And, hopefully, get some help. Because, you see, some of the letters I have are really hard to read. The handwriting’s not necessarily bad, just…crabbed and I can’t read it. So, I’m going to post a letter from time to time and what I’ve managed to make out of it thus far, and then ask you, the reading public, to help me fill in the blanks!

So, here we go!

Today’s puzzle comes from a eulogy written for my…great-grandfather (I think, or else great-great-grandfather), Frank Alexander Steiger, in January 1944 (pretty sure the following picture is him in the early 20th century with either my great aunt or grandmother).

Please read the scanned pages and then read through my guess as to what it says below.

Eulogy 1 Eulogy 2

When God called Frank A. Steiger to his eternal home, this community was bereft of one of its outstanding personalities. Whenever it becomes my privilege to know such a one, I endeavor to learn the secret of his attraction and _____ the Apostle Paul notes in his letter to the Romans, “Mary and ____ and ___________ to _________ may that ___________ good.”

These words are applicable to Mr. Steiger, giving us a true understanding of his successful career.

The cities and homes and roadways of Solano County bear witness to the faithful ___________ __________ Mr. Steiger in the use of his surveying instruments.  By means of them, he made rough ___________ smooth and uneven ______ (surfaces?) level. He _____________ obstructions and overcame barriers to clear the way for _______ ___________ and progress of Solano County. As great as was his ___________ as surveyor, his contributions to ___________ and progress as a man was even greater.  His work (?) was the _____________ of one who _____________ ______________ and ___________ with the dignity of aristocratic bearing.

The gentleness of his voice and manner, the culture and refinement of his interests and expressions revealed him to be a Christian gentleman in the true sense of the word.  Whether in his own home or _________ the family of Solano County officials or on the street talking to a neighbor or a fellow citizen, he was always a gentleman.  And the beauty of it all was that he seemed to be totally unconscious of what he was.  He hid himself beneath his own modesty.

Because Mr. Steiger lived in harmony with his _______________, he lived in peace.  His compromises were agreeable because he was agreeable; his ____________ conditions were pleasant because he made them so. When one ______ ________________, he ____________(places?) himself in harmony and through such ________, many __________ and ___________ ____________

“Glory and honor and ______ to every man that marketh/maketh good”.

Mr. Steiger, being the man that he was, his passing is as a beautiful sunset revealing _________ harmony here and hereafter. We shall always cherish his memory and his ____________ presence and loving influence shall ever remain with us.

So – there you go. Think you can help me out? I certainly hope so! I’d love to see what you guys come up with!

Have a great day, everyone.
