ARC Review: Shadowed

Author: Rebecca Zanetti
Publisher: Kensington Books/eKensington
Date of Publication: October 3, 2013

ShadowedDanger signs rise off Jase Kayrs like steam—the scars, the secrets, the strength. He’s got a mission, and he’s not interested in much outside of it. Except Brenna Dunne.

Brenna was an ass-kicking, name-taking witch—before the poison that’s killing her sapped her powers too. She knows there’s more to Jase than a handsome face and an ugly history. But there’s no time to find out what. Taking him as her mate might save her life. But once she unleashes the force of his desire, there will be no turning back…

Ready or not, here they come…

My Thoughts:

I think the best thing about doing these reviews is the fact that I get introduced to all sorts of authors that I never would have thought about reading before. Well, that and tons of books (most of them before they’re released, hehe)! I thought this was a great book.

I didn’t realize this was part of a series when I picked it up, and there was definitely a learning curve to adapting to this world that Ms. Zanetti has built. Supernatural creatures are definitely out of the closet here and active in the world. However, ultimately I was able to pick up the gist of what I needed.

Brenna has been sick for a very long time and mates with a vampire, expecting that would heal her (something about the mating bond, which isn’t fully explained how that works. Apparently only men can be vampires in this world and there are different kinds of vampires). She sees Jase as a wounded man (he was tortured by demons for 5 years) and is hurt that he’s only mating with her because he wants access to her powers (which when they mate is supposed to happen).

There’s a secondary plotline (beyond the romance aspects between Brenna and Jase) about a comet that’s about to pass by Earth. Brenna is supposedly the prophesied one. She’s the eighth daughter of a seventh daughter, something that’s never happened before, on top of the fact that she was born on the day the comet passed by Earth the last time. So, there are a lot of factions that either want to kill or her use her to harness the power that will come to her at that time.

There were also many secondary characters, ranging from a couple that I suspect were the subject of an earlier book in the series, to future book hero/heroines. I was fascinated by Janie, the prophetess/seer and how far she’d go to protect her family.

Brenna’s decision on how to use her powers at the end of the book surprised me, but primarily because I didn’t expect things to play out the way they did leading up to the moment when she had that huge amount of power. I hope they find a way of dealing with the virus that’s weakening the vampire mates soon.

Yes, I admit this review is a bit rambly, but there were just so many plots (not crowded, just jam-packed with greatness), it’s hard to do justice to them all in a single review. But definitely worth the price of admission (so to speak in my case). Buy this book, you probably won’t regret it.

For the most part, I thought this was a thrilling read and hope to find more by Ms. Zanetti in the near future. 4-star review totally!
