Word-Slingers – Guest Krystal Shannan

Today I have the pleasure of hosting Krystal Shannan. Oddly, I don’t remember how I met this awesome and lovely lady, but when she sent out a call for blogs to visit, I leaped at the chance to host her with her current book. So let’s get right to the good stuff!

1) How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing stories since elementary school. I started my first novel in high school –never finished it, LOL. Since then I have had several practice manuscripts. 2012 has been my year for pushing myself to the next step. By 2013 I hope to have 3 titles published.

2) How many balls do you juggle on a daily basis, and how do you manage to keep them all in the air (usually), (ball = work, writing, family, etc.)

Wow! Good, question. I am a juggler for sure… I have a full-time elementary teaching job, a husband, a two-year-old daughter, a dog, a house, a personal blog, just started a review blog, and usually three WIPs going at once. Ummmmm…. I don’t sleep a lot anymore. I hate to say that it’s usually my writing time that suffers, but I have found taking a notepad with me to work will make me write during all my breaks at school. I get a lot more written that I realize. Usually about 500-1000 words during the course of the day and then I try to have a power hour when I get home and hubby can watch the munchkin. I can usually write 1500-2000 words during a power hour. My social media time is before anyone else wakes up in the morning and after dinner while everyone is watching TV.

3) What can you tell us about OPEN HOUSE: Pool of Souls?

So I’ve always been obsessed with ancient Greece and Rome. I read everything I could find about the myths and legends and historical figures. I was a huge fan of the Hercules and Xena television shows as a kid too. They were so fake, but so much fun. I remember watching them with my brothers and laughing because we could see the people jump backwards when they were supposed to get punched or kicked and all the scenery was made of foam!
A couple years ago I began toying with the idea of a novel centered on Aphrodite, but I didn’t just want her to be the goddess of love that nobody really took seriously. So after a lot of research I read about this idea of a higher and a common Aphrodite. Two! One was the daughter of Gaia and Uranus and the other was the daughter of Zeus. THUS….. my muse was born. As soon as I found her, she came to life and began telling me all these fantastic stories about how she matched soul mates, was connected to humanity’s passion, and slowly by surely she’s been sharing bits and pieces of her own past.

4) What is it about the paranormal romance genre that you like so much?

The idea that the fantastic and otherworldly things are neatly tucked away in our world and we don’t even know it. I love the idea of magic and fantasy.

5) Do you think you’ll move to another genre, and if yes, what to and when?

I’ve tried my hand at historicals…. Not sure how that’s going to turn out. I have a contemporary novella releasing with Decadent Publishing this Christmas. I probably will dig more into the contemporary genre, but mostly stay in the paranormal.

6) Sweet or sour?

Both!

7) Chocolate or vanilla?

Dark Chocolate everything! Except when it comes to ice cream. Then I want vanilla. (TM – you are a sick, sick person. Vanilla ice cream?! But other than that, so with you on the dark chocolate!)

BLURB
Intrinsically woven into the fabric of human existence, Aphrodite, Titan Goddess of Love and Passion, dedicates herself to matching soul mates.

Rebecca Carol and Robert Corvin missed their original chance to bond when Ares, God of War, took control of Robert’s career ten years ago. Their souls have naturally pulled them back together for a second chance at love, but… How far will the gods go to get their own way?

Will divine influence create another perfect match or will it tear them apart forever?
EXCERPT
Rebecca opened the bag of takeout and handed Robert his box of lo mein while she went looking for her edamame and salt. She grabbed a mini eggroll and popped it into her mouth. The fried crispy pork and veggie flavors were heaven in her mouth. She moaned in satisfaction. The beans were at the bottom of the sack. She pulled out the box and popped open the little container of salt.
“Good?” Robert asked before shoveling a bite of noodles into his mouth.
“Delicious. Want one?” Rebecca held out another mini egg roll. Robert shook his head. She shrugged and popped it into her mouth as well. He chuckled.
“What if I changed my mind?”
“It’s too late now, genius; I swallowed it.” Rebecca laughed and broke open an edamame bean. She licked the salt off the pod and sucked the three little soybeans into her mouth. When she glanced up from her food, she couldn’t help but smirk. Robert had frozen in place, chopsticks midway to his mouth, and was just watching her eat. His brown eyes had darkened, and he was looking at her as though she were dinner instead of the lo mein.
“Are you okay?” she asked cautiously, the corners of her mouth still turned up in a smirk.
“I don’t think you’re going to be finishing that food right now.”
“Really?” Rebecca set her paper box of edamame on the floor. “Why not?”
Robert carefully placed his box to the side. He pushed her food out of the way and grabbed the edge of the cushion she was sitting on. The pillow slid easily on the hardwood floor.
            “I need to kiss you.”
