Labor Day Word-Slingers – Guest Parker Kincade

Happy Labor Day, my friends in the States. For those outside the states, happy Monday! It’s a national holiday here, which is always nice. My guest on this holiday morning is Parker Kincade, here to promote her new book, One Night Stand.

1) How long have you been writing?

For as long as I can remember. I wrote my first story when I was seven, but, according to my family, I’d been making up characters and stories long before then. Writing has always been a part of my life, a part of who I am.

2) How many balls do you juggle on a daily basis, and how do you manage to keep them all in the air (usually), (ball = work, writing, family, etc.)

I’m glad you clarified what “balls” you were talking about, otherwise this could have gone in a whole different direction! LOL!
So, balls. Right. Wow – a lot. I own a business, attend graduate school and have a family. A typical day for me includes working out, going to class, seeing scheduled clients, homework and writing. Not necessarily in that order. I swear my husband is the most patient and supportive man I’ve ever met! I’m happiest when I’m working, but it’s not easy to keep balance. I work out to keep my energy high and meditate to keep my head clear. I live and breathe by my calendar. It’s the only way I can stay on track to get things done. I block time for everything – and I’m not kidding about that. If you saw my calendar, you’d see time carved out for all of the stuff I listed, and even things like “eat” and “sleep.” Now, I rarely need a reminder to sleep, but I am known to miss a meal or three when I get busy. When my schedule gets overwhelming or I begin to feel stressed out, I take a few days off to decompress and then get right back at it.

3) What can you tell us about your release One Night Stand? The good stuff, not just the blurb. Share some insight into your writing process, please. J

I love strong, alpha men – so when I started this series, there was no question it would be filled with them. I just didn’t realize it would be their sister who would get the first book! One Night Stand came about on a road trip and is my response to the question: What would a woman do if every man she’d ever been with cheated on her? The adventure Amanda Martin sets out to have turns into the ride of her life after she meets sexy Joe Sterling. Joe is a strong, powerful man who knows his way around a woman’s body. Did I mention Joe is an ex-military sniper? And a Texan? Toss in three older, very protective brothers, a free-spirited best friend and a few twists and turns and you have One Night Stand. It’s alpha males; strong women; sarcastic humor; hot, steamy sex and a healthy dose of the “f” word!
As to my process…that’s not an easy thing to talk about. I’m still developing what works for me. I hate to outline. I’m super visual, so I storyboard a lot. I like to have a general idea of where I am going with each scene, but I don’t get to detailed in the planning stage. My stories are character-driven. While I may not do much story planning, I do spend a great deal of time developing characters profiles– even if it’s information the reader will never know. More often than not, I give the characters the reins and follow where I’m led.

4) What is it about the erotic romance genre, as opposed to “contemporary romance” that you like so much?

It was a natural progression for me to carry the chemistry I’d worked so hard to develop between my characters into the bedroom. It gives me another venue to explore the passion, the connection that holds my characters together. To be honest, I want to challenge the boundaries of the reader. I want the reader to experience a level of intimacy that leaves them breathless. Writing in the erotic romance genre is how I choose to do it.

5) Do you think you’ll move to another genre, and if yes, what to and when?

I write what I love to read. I’m a romantic, so whatever I write will have some sort of romantic element. That being said, I am developing a paranormal romance series that, more than likely, will not fall into the erotic romance genre. As to when? Well, I am currently writing a new 4-book series, as well as continuing the Martin Family saga so it will be quite awhile before my paranormal romance series gets any attention!

6) Sweet or sour?

Definitely sweet.

7) Chocolate or vanilla?

I live in a small town in the South and am surrounded by the best friends a girl could ask for, as well as a family who supports my writing habit without hesitation.

When I’m not sitting at my laptop desperately trying to shush the voices in my head, I usually have my nose stuck in a book or have loud music playing while I create a fun new recipe in the kitchen. No matter what I’m doing, I’m usually flanked by my Boxer, who I absolutely adore.

I’ve been writing since I was a young girl. My beloved stepmother, who always said I was a hopeless romantic, introduced me to romance novels when I was in my early teens.  I remember that first book, which I still read once a year, and I think every man I have ever met has been measured, in some form or fashion, with the hero from that story.

That’s the power of a good romance. It turns us on, makes us laugh, makes us cry…it feeds our soul.

Oh, how the times have changed from those early swashbucklers!  Nowadays, bookstores are full with an abundance of alpha males and the women who can stand toe-to-toe with them and take them down.  And I love every gun-toting sword-wielding sports playing DNA altered vampire shape-shifting demon on the shelf.

I’ll admit I’m a huge book junkie. At my house, deciding what I’m going to read next is a little like shopping at the bookstore! So many to choose from, and I just keep buying them.

Some of my favorite authors, in no particular order, are Lora Leigh, Lorelei James, Larissa Ione, Maya Banks, Gena Showalter, Kresley Cole, and Sherrilyn Kenyon . . . just to name a few!

Amanda Martin has the worst taste in men. After being cheated on not once, but twice, she’s lost all faith in men…and in herself. Determined to regain her confidence, Amanda decides to have a one-night stand. No relationship, no promises, no threat of being hurt again…just sex. What she doesn’t anticipate is meeting a handsome-as-sin stranger who will give her pleasure unlike any she’s ever known.

Joe Sterling has spent his life avoiding relationships, his former job as a military sniper not allowing for such commitments. Now he’s come home to Texas, to let go of the past and to prove he is more than the killer he’s been trained to be.

When Amanda’s life is threatened, Joe’s killer instinct is tested while Amanda struggles to protect her heart. Will they succumb to their overwhelming desire for each other, or lose it all by letting the past dictate their future?

There we go. Thanks for coming by Parker. Loved having you here.

Coming up on Thursday (9/6), we will have Lenore Wolfe. Hope to see you there.
